As WWE fans, we’ve seen a lot of Superstars defying authority over the years. WWE practically built the Attitude era around it. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin became the crowd favorite because of his iconic defiance to Vince McMahon. Although moments like those seldom come in WWE today, Kevin Owens did cut it very close with a huge feud against Shane McMahon last year.

Shane McMahon, being himself, began cutting segments to increase screen time for himself. We started seeing him so often that it got annoying. He kept pushing down Superstars and potential greats, in order to keep himself in the limelight.

Kevin Owens realized this and called out Shane for it. Believe me when I say that it was one of the most dramatic things WWE had ever witnessed.

Going on an epic rant, Kevin Owens completely lost it and blasted every word he could think of in this SmackDown segment. Within a matter of minutes, Shane walked out and immediately asked the tech team to cut off Owens’ mic.

After they did, Owens just picked up another mic! After that one was cut as well, Owens snatched the commentator’s mic and spoke through it.

The rant by Kevin Owens sparked a major rivalry

This rant obviously angered Shane McMahon, who then decided to call security to escort Owens out. However, Owens escaped and made his way out of the stadium through the crowd.

The feud was then a given. Owens would go on to face Shane McMahon at SummerSlam 2019. The stipulation was Shane’s ego vs Owens’ career. Owens was compelled to hit Shane with a chair and warned him about it.

Shane used this to his advantage and provoked Owens to do it. This would lead to his disqualification. However, Kevin Owens resisted the urge and went on to win the match in the same old way.

The rivalry was taken further in a big match on SmackDown in October. This was a career-ending ladder match, which meant that the loser would be terminated from WWE.

It was do-or-die for the Superstars who had to clinch the briefcase suspended above the ring using a ladder.

This match took things to the extreme. Both Superstars gave the fans everything they had hoped for and more. Shane McMahon delivered both his iconic highflying moves- the elbow drop on the commentary table, and the beloved Coast-to-Coast.

Kevin Owens, however, proved to be a better competitor. He Frog Splashed Shane through a ladder! He then went on to Powerbomb McMahon through another ladder, putting him out of the match.

Owens would then climb the ladder and unhook the briefcase, winning the match. That would mark the end of Shanes’s career at WWE, at least storyline wise.

It’s hard to think of Kevin Owens last year and compare him to this one. WWE needs to give him more mic time and segments like these. WWE has a great potential on their hands, and Owens deserves another big push.
