Stone Cold Steve Austin “Wasn’t Thrilled At All” About His Tag Team With Brian Pillman

When one talks about the most infamous and electrifying wrestlers in WWE history, the name ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin comes to mind. No other wrestler signifies the ‘Attitude Era’ better than Austin. However, while fans remember Steve Austin as one of the greatest singles wrestlers in WWE history, only a handful of people remember that before becoming ‘Stone Cold,’ he was ‘Stunning’ Steve Austin.

As much as it is hard to believe, WWE partnered Steve Austin up with Brian Pillman to form the ‘Hollywood Blonds’. At the time in 1993, Steve Austin was still finding his way and hadn’t got the main event spot yet.

In an episode of Vice’s ‘Dark Side Of The Ring,’ Austin revealed how he and Brian came to be known as the infamous duo of the ‘Hollywood Blonds’. In the documentary, Austin says,

“And I wasn’t thrilled at all — this is about when I’m fixing to start getting a run as a united states champion so I was really looking forward to that. I walk in the building and here’s Brian coming up behind me. I knew Brian, but we weren’t hanging out. He goes, ‘hey kid we need to come up with a finish’ and I said what the hell are you talking about. He goes, ‘we’re tag team now’ and I was really not happy.

“I had nothing against Brian but it’s like — I was a singles wrestler. I enjoyed working — with another guy in the ring and only having to depend on myself. — they didn’t have no name planned for us, no this, no that. It was two singles guys and they were gonna throw us together as an interim tag team. Basically to get other people over because they didn’t have plans for Brian and they didn’t have plans for Steve Austin. So — we’re gonna try to make the most of the situation”

The creation of Hollywood Blonds

Anytime that wrestlers start to work and travel with each other, they become closer. Such was the case for Austin and Brian.

Steve Austin also revealed an interesting fact when he mentioned that he’d normally be at the wheel while riding. Brian would ride shotgun, reading dictionaries because he was always trying to increase his vocabulary for promos. Stone Cold revealed how the name came about,

“We’re going down the road and he goes, ‘hey kid every tag team has to have a name so what about Hollywood Blonds because it’s been done before but it’s been a while so let’s do that’. I was thinking to myself well I ain’t comimg up with a better one. And so like I was cool with being the Hollywood Blondes”

Brian and Austin’s in-ring chemistry made the duo successful. Austin himself revealed he loved tag team wrestling once he figured it out.
