The Fear of Vince McMahon Forced a Wrestling Icon to Turn Down a Lucrative WWE Role Despite His Massive Potential

Vince McMahon is an infamous boss in the wrestling industry. While he nourished many talented superstars, there has been much criticism for his actions. Several wrestlers have written in their biographies and spoken about him in interviews, although none could affect McMahon adversely until the recent past. However, one thing that everyone agrees on is his anger. Everyone could see that on the TV when he used to fire people on live television.

While people have different opinions, McMahon was the only one who brought WWE to the point that it is today. In addition to that, he gave the world some of its biggest celebrities; Dwayne Johnson, John Cena, Steve Austin, and Hulk Hogan, to name just a few of them. But what happens when one of the biggest talents in the industry is scared to join the company because of McMahon’s anger? That is exactly what happened with this wrestling legend.

The fear of Vince McMahon once kept this WWE legend from joining the company

While talking on the Busted Open Radio, Diamond Dallas Page revealed another wrestling role that he auditioned for.

He said, “When I left [in 2002], I was so burnt out. Kevin Dunn asked me to go and do a test to be an announcer. They wanted me to do a spot, so I did it. I went up there [to WWE HQ in Stamford, CT] and I did it. Kevin called me back, and he goes, ‘I love it. We’re gonna start you, not with SmackDown. We’re gonna start you with the satellite for the first month or two. You get your feet wet, you’ll be on SmackDown. In no time, you’re gonna be on Raw.

But, DDP later turned it down knowing Vince McMahon would “really scream” through the headset. After that, he did not hear from WWE for the next five years.

While it took 5 more years for DDP to join the WWE roster, it was a great thing that he didn’t show up for the role. Being one of the best wrestlers in the peak of WCW’s limelight. He had amazing wrestling matches with the likes of Sting and Hollywood Hogan. But seeing him stuck in the role of an announcer would’ve been sad to wrestling fans.

On a related note, another story of Vince McMahon’s anger that resurfaced some months ago was regarding Bray Wyatt. Matt Hardy, his former tag team partner, revealed what kind of relationship the boss and employee shared during his time in WWE.
