Part of the reason The Undertaker character was so successful was that it blurred the line between reality and kayfabe. Even outside the ring, one would rarely find him out of character. This dedication by The Phenom helped him massively in getting over with the fans. Not just him, this was the trait in almost all the wrestlers of yesteryears.

They could go to any lengths in order to protect their gimmicks. And there was no one better at it than ‘The American Bada*s’. He recently spoke about what he thinks about a current lot of wrestlers.

The Undertaker opens up on the current crop of wrestlers

Taker recently chatted with Ariel Helwani Meets. In the interaction, he pointed out what the performers nowadays were doing wrong. The Hall of Famer said, “I do think, that you know a lot of our talent and just not just our talent but just in general like they don’t understand any concept of protecting a character or even developing a character enough to wanna protect it.

“You know, they go and do something on TV and then you go to their social media and then they’re just completely different you know,” added Taker.

Definitely sharp words from The Deadman here. But after a career that lasted more than three decades, it is hard to argue with him. Taker would be aware of all the ins and outs of the business. And this aspect of modern-day sports entertainment certainly irks him a bit. The surprise element in the wrestling industry is slowly and surely fading away. And there would be many who would agree with the legend’s assessment here.

It’s not the first time that Taker has raised questions over the current running of the industry either. He has been quite vocal about it in previous years as well.

He has previously also voiced his strong opinions on WWE

The Phenom appeared in 2021 on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. The 4-time WWE champion highlighted the difference between the locker rooms of the past and today. He responded, I remember walking into my first real dressing room, and all I saw were some crusty f***ing men. Half of them had guns and knives in their bags. Now you walk in, there’s guys playing video games”.

His comments caused a huge uproar back then. The Deadman directly questioned the toughness of today’s performers. Legends like Mick Foley also took exception to his thoughts. Foley came into the defense of the current crop of wrestlers and stated they were as tough as him. Taker’s unhinged opinions would find many old-school suitors. However, as evident, he rubbed many people in the industry the wrong way.

And when Taker speaks, he echoes the sentiments of many of his followers. While he may be right, the continuously changing times mean the wrestling world has to adapt to it as well. And doing so will never be accepted universally.
