In his twenty-plus years in wrestling, he has pulled off more death defying leaps and ridiculous stunts than any other wrestler. However, one stunt might’ve been too over the top, or at least that’s what CM Punk thinks.

On the Movie Crypt podcast, the former WWE Superstar recalled a moment in his SummerSlam classic against Jeff Hardy where he was legitimately scared for his well-being.

“I remember wrestling Jeff Hardy in the Staples Center, and he was jumping off a very tall ladder onto me. I just had to lay on the table for an extended period of time, which really makes you think about it. It’s one of those things where, I’m just looking and thinking, ‘he’s really high up there. (H/T Fightful Wrestling)

“You just stew in that moment and I was thinking, ‘I should just get up and walk away. Why am I laying here? This is stupid.’ He finally jumped on me and I was like, ‘Yeah, that hurt.’ You want to protect Jeff more than you want to protect yourself because he’s the one that’s jumping, but you realize that’s a 200-pound man hurdling at you from a great height and it’s not going to end well for either of you.”

Punk vs Jeff Hardy’s brutal rivalry

While Punk hated the spot, fans inside the Staples Center lost their collective minds upon seeing Jeff hurtle to the ground. Eventually, the spot would cost him the match and Punk would win the World Heavyweight Championship by winning the ladder match.

SummerSlam was actually chapter three in a storied rivalry between Punk and Jeff Hardy. The two-time MITB winner cashed in his briefcase on Jeff Hardy after he went through a grueling ladder match against Edge.

In the following title defence, Punk kicked the referee to get himself disqualified and then feigned an eye injury.

Although Hardy won the title back at Night of Champions, Punk beat him at his own game at SummerSlam. The rivalry took a wicked turn when Punk mocked Hardy’s personal demons.

On August 28, Punk ended his feud with Hardy. However, he also ended his career after beating him in a steel cage match.
