Fans were taken all the way back to Baron Corbin’s 2015 and 2016 NXT days when the last person to defeat WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns showed up as The Lone Wolf. Clad in leather, with his old theme music to back him up, Corbin came ready to face reigning NXT champion Carmelo Hayes at the closing event of NXT Goldrush. The match seemed like it was going Corbin’s way and would have marked the glorious return of his persona. However, Hayes would turn the tables at the last moment to defend his title.

Despite being a heel and loser of the title match, fans openly applauded Baron Corbin’s performance and made their support clear.

A level of aggression that suited the persona accompanied the Lone Wolf’s return. Corbin dominated the match, towering above Hayes and punishing him every chance he got. However, Hayes would seal Corbin’s fate with a fadeaway leg drop at the end. The match did not convince fans enough for them to side with the victory. They took to Instagram to show Corbin their support.

A fan on Instagram said, “Joke! Y’all brought back the lone wolf and made him lose??“. While some comments were long and irate, others were short. One fan commented: “Great match. Wrong winner“. There were also comments in the opposite vein. A fan said: “Why’s everyone think just cause they changed the gimmick back he should have won?“. Regardless of how divisive the match was, the support Corbin received after the match was definitely unexpected.

Even though he lost the NXT title match, Baron Corbin’s legacy remains true. He is the last person to have defeated the reigning undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. ‘King Corbin’ defeated Roman Reigns in 2019. The WWE Friday Night SmackDown episode in Manchester remains the last time someone dominated Roman Reigns in the ring.

Reigns has been enjoying a time of undisputed greatness in WWE for some time. However, the Money in the Bank Bloodline Civil War event set to be held at the end of this week at the O2 Arena in London will define the champion’s role as Tribal Chief of the Bloodline faction. There is bad blood between the Uso brothers and Reigns. If he cannot resolve the situation, one of WWE’s most historic and strongest factions is bound to enter its final chapter.
