Why the name “Bearcat”?
Many wrestling geeks speculate that the “Bearcat” nickname is a reference to Bearcat Wright, a popular African American pro wrestler from the 1950s and 1960s.
WWE also inducted bearcat Wright into the WWE Hall of Fame’s Legacy Wing in 2017. Wright also became the first-ever Black World Champion in the professional wrestling business.

However, it seems like the inspiration from Bearcat Wright is just partly responsible for his new nickname. It seems like the WWE is comparing Lee to the real-life, animal known as ‘Bearcat’.
The ‘bearcat’ is agile like a cat in the canopy and less adept on the ground, walking flat-footed like a bear. Similarly, Lee is big in size and performs agile move sets.
