Former NXT Champion Keith Lee has been absent from the TV since defeating Karrion Kross in an episode of WWE Raw back in the month of August.

Since then, Lee has been booked to work on dark matches when Raw goes off the air and it has been reported earlier that Lee has been using some heel tactics lately.

A scheduled, Keith Lee appeared on last night’s episode of Raw when it went off the air. However, it was different this time. The WWE introduced Lee with a new nickname, a nickname that suits his personality.

Keith Lee is now Keith “Bearcat” Lee

As he made his way to the ring, the WWE announcer announced him as Keith ‘Bearcat’ Lee. He then won a squash match over a local enhancement talent before Monday’s Raw and he was again announced as Keith “Bearcat” Lee.

WWE is certainly planning on portraying Keith Lee as a massive monster heel who stops at nothing. In these live events, the fans saw that Lee has been growing his beard out to give him a more serious look.

Why the name “Bearcat”?

Many wrestling geeks speculate that the “Bearcat” nickname is a reference to Bearcat Wright, a popular African American pro wrestler from the 1950s and 1960s.

WWE also inducted bearcat Wright into the WWE Hall of Fame’s Legacy Wing in 2017. Wright also became the first-ever Black World Champion in the professional wrestling business.

However, it seems like the inspiration from Bearcat Wright is just partly responsible for his new nickname. It seems like the WWE is comparing Lee to the real-life, animal known as ‘Bearcat’.

The ‘bearcat’ is agile like a cat in the canopy and less adept on the ground, walking flat-footed like a bear. Similarly, Lee is big in size and performs agile move sets.
