With just a few years of experience, Dwayne Johnson blew up in WWE seemingly overnight. His success drove everyone to ride his coattails for a chance at stardom. But that was not just the case with the new guys. The legends were also the same, looking to get into a program with The Rock to be in the spotlight again.
When Hulk Hogan returned to WWE, the company immediately put him against The Rock. Unlike many others, Hogan had the stardom and the magnetic pull that had The Rock eager to work with him. In hindsight, an interview revealed The Rock’s fanboying over this legend, which certainly could’ve helped in making his main event match with Hogan a reality.

Dwayne Johnson once revealed his fanboy love for this WWE legend
In an interview, back from the early 2000s, Dwayne Johnson talked to Big Boy’s Neighborhood about his upcoming movie, ‘Scorpion King’. Just a few months prior, he wrestled Hogan at WrestleMania X-8. So, the most obvious question was what Johnson thought of Hogan.

To which Johnson replied, “I was a fan of that guy [Hulk Hogan] when I was about 10. You know his age aside, I think he’s 49, he looks great. One of those things was finally you got these two guys, the biggest names in the industry. Mike Tyson Ali was the analogy. We’re able to go out there and it was 70,000 strong and we broke records with that one night. It was a great night.”
It would have been a surreal moment for The Rock to wrestle his idol at WrestleMania, just as it was for those fans watching the two icons clash.
But this wasn’t Johnson’s first big match at WrestleMania, neither was this Hogan’s first dance. So, what was the factor in the match that made it, a truly iconic clash between the top stars?
Why was The Rock vs Hulk Hogan the biggest match of its era?
Just after buying out WCW, Vince McMahon brought back the biggest faction in the former company, nWo to WWE. This meant that he needed to put Hogan against the top star of WWE and luckily, Johnson was the top star.

A battle between the new star who recently made his acting debut versus the ‘Hollywood’ Hogan was the best premise for a grand match at WrestleMania. And it delivered on the show as well. Even the referee of the match said that WWE had to tone down the audience’s volume because of the sheer magnitude of charisma involved.
