Johnny Gargano recently revealed in an interview that he was unaware and not prepared for the main roster call-up back in 2019.
The NXT superstar sat down with Louis Dangoor from GiveMeSport and talked about the time when the company unexpectedly announced on social media that superstars like Tommaso Ciampa, Johnny Gargano, and Aleister Black were all on their way to the next episode of RAW.

Speaking in the interview, Gargano said that he was away from his residence celebrating his father’s birthday when he got a call saying that he has to be on RAW the next Monday.

“I got a call randomly on a Saturday morning, I was in Cleveland for my Dad’s birthday, and I was basically told I was going to be on Monday Night Raw on Monday.”
“I didn’t have any gear or anything like that with me, I had to call Tommaso who was in Florida at the time, he had to go and get a key to my apartment and get my gear,”
“So Tommaso had to bring me my gear and a suit and things like that, because literally, it was so last minute, we were so not prepared for anything like this, and we didn’t know what was going on,” Gargano said.
Why did this call-up did not work out?
It was during the same time when Gargano and Ciampa were feuding in NXT and the management put them together in tag-team action in their debut match at RAW and other matches in SmackDown.

Gargano tried to get a better alternative for his main roster call-up because he didn’t want his long-term story with Ciampa to go to waste. He explained that there was a sense of pride attached to the narrative regardless of whether it moved over to Raw or SmackDown.

“It was a story we were both very proud of, and a story we were both very protective over. So, no matter what direction we were going to be given on Raw and on SmackDown,”
“Luckily things worked out how they were supposed to and I came back to NXT and everything worked out, but yeah, it was so last minute,” Gargano said in the same interview.
Meanwhile, Ricochet and Aleister Black remained on the main roster, and the management decided to send Gargano and Ciampa back to NXT where they continued their feud.
