In a major announcement on January 23, WWE unveiled its decision to move its flagship television show, RAW, to Netflix starting in January 2025. This emerges as a groundbreaking deal that is reportedly valued at $5 billion over 10 years. This unprecedented shift has sent shockwaves through the pro-wrestling community and has become the talk of the town. And a veteran of the industry shared his thoughts on this unprecedented move.

Eric Bischoff discloses his thoughts on the Netflix move

While the news of RAW moving to Netflix was already a mammoth piece of information to digest, the inclusion of Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson on the board of directors of TKO sent further shockwaves through the wrestling community. Speaking on his podcast, Strictly Business, WWE Hall of Famer Eric Bischoff shared his initial reaction to both the news and RAW’s shift to Netflix. “It’s, you know, it’s a monster deal, and I haven’t had a lot of time to think about it. I was at an airplane when the news broke, and, uh, it was like two large pieces of news: one The Rock joining the the board of directors of TKO, which I think is fantastic.” he said.

Bischoff further reflected on the unexpected nature of the partnership with Netflix. He mentioned how the discussions about RAW’s future had often revolved around platforms like Amazon. He and others counting Netflix out of the race were surprising, to say the least. Though it makes a lot of sense.

The Netflix deal you know It’s funny with all the conversations that we’ve had, not just you and I but everybody about where Raw may go and certainly we talked a lot about Amazon. I think Amazon being 800-pound gorilla in many respects, uh made a lot of sense. Because of you know the ancillary opportunities that came with it. But Netflix has been the real 800-pound gorilla in the streaming space for quite some time, and uh, why we didn’t see it coming. It makes a ton of sense for a lot of reasons. And uh, I’m there for it man. What a great day.”

The Netflix deal is not just limited to RAW outside the US. It also includes a bundle of SmackDown, NXT, other premium live events, documentaries, and additional projects. This would prove to be a significant partnership for both the WWE and Netflix. Now only time will tell if the move will unlock unprecedented international growth or pose challenges for fans.
