Twenty-six years ago, WWE veteran Stone Cold Steve Austin came up with his signature finish. Stone Cold Steve Austin debuted his Stone Cold Stunner on Savio Vega on June 17, 1996. Since then, the infamous “Stunner” has haunted several WWE icons throughout the years. The Texas Rattlesnake “Stunner” is arguably the best wrestling finisher in pro wrestling history.

However, Stone Cold’s “Stunner” maneuver resembles the WWE Hall of Famer’s Diamond Dallas Page’s “Diamond Cutter” finisher. Back in the 90s, DDP smashed many of his opponents inside the ring with his Diamond Cutter finisher.

In 1996, Steve Austin was a part of Mr. McMahon’s company; however, DDP was a part of the rival promotion WCW.

How did Stone Cold Steve Austin come up with the Stunner?

Diamond Dallas Page revealed how other professional wrestlers adapted his finisher in WWE on the latest episode of the DDP Snake Pit podcast. However, when Austin hit his first “Stunner,” it differed from DDP’s Diamond Cutter. Even though Stone Cold Stunner and Diamond Cutter had an uncanny resemblance, Steve Austin pulled chords to make it his original finisher.

DDP said, “When Austin was coming up with his new finish that he was going to use, it turned into Stunner; they brought it up. From what I understand, how that legend has it, ‘Steve, you should do your version of the cutter.”

According to Diamond Dallas Page, WWE was impressed by his finisher. In addition, Vince McMahon’s company also told Stone Cold Steve Austin to do his version of the Diamond Cutter maneuver.

Did The Texas Rattlesnake agree to WWE’s decision?

After his first vicious “Stone Cold Stunner,” The Texas Rattlesnake rose in the industry. Austin defeated Jake “The Snake” Roberts at the King of the Ring tournament in 1996 and cut his life’s most iconic promo.

But Diamond Dallas Page believes the WWE imitated his finishing maneuver and turned it into the legendary Stone Cold Stunner.

“And Steve was like, ‘Nope. I ain’t doing the same thing he’s doing.’ Austin’s got to be original. And they took a version of that and turned it into that Stunner, which kind of got over!” DDP added.

Even though Stone Cold refused to do the alternate version of the DDP cutter, Page imagines his finisher is what inspired Steve Austin’s Stunner. During the same podcast, Diamond Dallas Page also revealed that Triple H would also use the same version of his finisher on WWE programming. However, DDP immediately told 14-time World Champion Triple H not to use the Diamond Cutter move.
