Apart from the traditional pinfall match, the WWE features a variety of stipulation-based matches. Who could forget the mystique of an Inferno match or the violence involved in an I-Quit match? One of these insane gimmick encounters is the Buried Alive match. Revered legends like The Undertaker and JBL recently opened up about the effect this type of clash had on the masses.

The Phenom has been a part of all five matches involving this unique stipulation. Hence, there isn’t anyone more equipped than him to talk about the topic. Taker recently delved deeper into the first-ever Buried Alive match. It took place in 1996 in the In Your House event where he took on perennial rival Mankind, aka Mick Foley. “On Her Own” – WWE Icon Mick Foley Confesses Bad ‘Problem’ His Wife Had to Suffer at The Undertaker PPV

The comments from the legend highlight that not only the spectators but the Stamford-based promotion was unprepared for the sheer magnitude of the match. JBL was out there with half the roster as they had miscalculated the human force that was necessary to kayfabe bury Taker. However, the impact that the match had is herculean. The image of Taker’s hand coming out of the grave is an iconic one and is synonymous with his legacy.

The New Generation Era was filled with such splendid spectacles, especially involving Mankind and The Undertaker.

The 90s were filled with the duo’s epic battles

The Mankind and Taker’s tussle over the decade always found an innovative way to keep the fans enchanted. Their carnage-filled 1998 Hell In A Cell match is one of the best matches in the WWE’s entire history. Foley sustained the majority of the sick bumps during the match. One of the insane spots in the match featured him slammed from the top of the cage by Taker. Even wrestling legend Stone Cold once commented about the dangerous spot.

The two could go to extraordinary lengths in order to take their rivalry to the next level. And that is one of the reasons why their conflict is one of the bests ever. The supernatural element in The Phenom’s gimmick and the madness-filled element in Foley’s character made it all the more intriguing. The wrestling juggernaut would even today struggle to find opponents who complement each other the way they did.
