Santino Marella in the WWE was nothing short of comedic gold. In fact, he was one of the major reasons why the PG era attracted as many kids as it did, and having a goofy gimmick in top promotions was no longer taboo in the realm of pro wrestling. And one of the biggest highlights of his career was the two records he created back in 2009.

The first was being the fastest man to get eliminated in a Royal Rumble match, as he got eliminated in one second. The second record was being the man to eliminate himself from a battle royal match. And it seems like Pat McAfee got inspired by this move by Marella as he recreated the same in tonight’s 2024 men’s Royal Rumble.

The hilarious recreation of an elimination

When the timer hit 0, Pat McAfee was announced to be the 22nd entrant in the Royal Rumble match. It was teased for quite a while that the American sports analyst would be making his return but everyone believed it would be limited to commentary. When he was announced as the next entrant, he seemed shocked at first, but after being hyped up by the crowd and Michael Cole, he mustered up the courage to enter the ring—almost. It seemed like it wasn’t enough as he saw the 7-foot-3-inch Omos standing at the center of the ring with Bron Breakker.

Realizing that he lacked the skills and the courage, he eliminated himself from the match by crossing the top rope and walking out of the ring. Reminiscent of the 15-Man Battle Royale Brisbane Cup 2009, Santino Marella realized that he could not square off against Triple H and John Cena, thus hilariously eliminating himself.

With this hilarious comeback, can we get to see more of McAfee? And what does his future look like with the WWE?

Pat McAfee was part of the SmackDown commentary table in 2022 until he got a job offer at ESPN Game Day during the college football season. He would eventually return as a guest at both the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 39 PLE, but eventually signed a lucrative contract with ESPN, although this was not renewed, and he got fully dedicated to his show, The Pat McAfee Show.

However, after being removed from the WWE SmackDown commentary team, Kevin Patrick was fired by WWE, and veteran announcer Michael Cole is keeping Corey Graves company. While it remains uncertain whether Cole will be a permanent replacement for Patrick, given that he works on RAW, Pat McAfee may be a viable option considering that he has already successfully filled this role, and even in the recent edition of his YouTube show he has hinted at the idea of returning to his previous position.

Before his rumble entrance, McAfee’s last appearance in WWE took place on SmackDown in September of last year, where he and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had a segment alongside former United States Champion Austin Theory. And now fans surely would want him to be a somewhat permanent addition to the commentary team. What do you think? Should WWE bring back McAfee to the blue brand? Let us know in the comments.
