The WCW or World Championship Wrestling, the promotion was one of the biggest promotions in the United States. However, it has been reported that by 1999, due to certain missteps and the prominence of WWE’s Attitude Era, the promotion’s ratings took a serious hit, following its untimely end.

Why did WCW fail?

It all started back in 1988 when Ted Turner, the founder of Cable News Network acquired the promotion from the Crockett family. That decision brought WCW back into mainstream media and even gave a tough fight to WWE’s then-Monday Night Raw.  However, things started to take a turn for the worse later on. Unlike Vince McMahon, Turner did not micromanage the promotion. For this, he used to rely on  Eric Bischoff. Later, when Bischoff got involved with the nWo of WCW, a lot of questions were raised about his management skills.

This was then paired with many other things. The roster of the promotion was unusually crowded. Many fans believed that a lot of talents were there just to show fans that they had a huge roster. Not many stars were being utilized to their complete capacity. Apart from that, there was a financial aspect as well. Many stars from WWE used to make a shift to WCW. It was not due to the fact that the promotion was pioneering new things. Instead, it was for the fat checks that were being provided to the stars. An obsession with ratings led them to make this move thus newer talents had stunned growth.

One take at a time

For me pro wrestling has two things that I like the most, storytelling and fighting. Let’s just say movies are failing to keep me entertained in those departments. I grew up watching WWF and not WWE and any hardcore fan will agree that the two are not the same, but I love both iterations.
