Whether it is a brand new film contract or an upcoming wrestling match, The Rock never fails to disappoint. Almost every fan knows Johnson’s obsession with the world of sports. Ever since he was a kid, the legend was mesmerized by sports. To be more specific, The Rock has all his heart and mind inside one popular sport, American football. Time and again he has told the world about how he had dedicated his younger self to the game of football. The former WWE champion even played a backup role for future NFL star, Warren Sapp. His love for the brilliant yet competitive sport didn’t fade away with age. In fact, it carried on to become so vast that Johnson actually ended up buying a football league altogether.

XFL stands for Extreme Football League, which The Rock eventually bought along with his long-term business partner. The football league is a platform for the minors to showcase their talents and make a name for themselves. The teams that play come from all across the United States. There will be a total of 8 teams split into two divisions, North and South.

Liking and admiration do not seem enough to put a person into a complicated sports league. So, there must be some story behind The Rock’s entry into the sports league.

How did Dwayne Johnson become a part of the XFL?

Vince McMahon, the popular face behind WWE, founded the football league with the same name back in 1999. After playing just one season in the year 2001, the league ceased operations. Yet again, there was an attempt to reboot the league in the year 2018 by the same man as before. The first-ever season since its revival came with a swing in February 2020. However, that idea came to a close as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world with all its force. Even though everything looked to be upsetting about the league, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson decided to be the guardian angel for the minors’ league.

The Great One is all set to launch the thrilling league for all the die-hard football fans out there. Fans even started calling it the ‘XFL 3.0’ because of how it had been created twice already. This time around, things look promising as the league appears to be in safe and successful hands. The Rock is reportedly the co-owner of the league along with his ex-wife Dany Garcia. It appears that the ex-couple bought the promotion after it had filed for bankruptcy.

Dwayne Johnson’s own XFL team

The XFL 2.0 came to an unfortunate close in early 2020 after only 5 weeks of play. Following this, the company filed for bankruptcy to avoid legal consequences in April 2020. Then in August of the same year, the XFL saw a hopeful sign as the ex-couple, Garcia and Johnson, bought the dying promotion for a generous amount of $15 Million in partnership with Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital. Since Dwayne Johnson is one of the co-owners of the minor league itself, it would be unethical for him to own a specific team for his profit.

In turn, all the co-owners did a great job by setting up the best of the best eight teams from across the nation. DC Defenders, Seattle Sea Dragons, St. Louis Battlehawks, and Vegas Vipers are battling it out in the North division of the league. Whereas, Arlington Renegades, Houston Roughnecks, Orlando Guardians, and San Antonio Brahmas compete in the South division.

The latest season has kicked off this year from 18th February onwards.

Will Dwayne Johnson convert the league into sports entertainment?

The popular question arose in the minds of all football fans as soon as the news was out that Dwayne Johnson was going to buy the football league. Everybody started wondering whether the pro wrestler’s relationship with the WWE will affect the football league as well. After all, The Rock is a prominent name in sports entertainment and his co-ownership can really affect the league. However, as the league moves forward, it appears that the new 10-week-long league is as legit as any other competitive football league out there.

Especially considering the love that the wrestler has had for football as a sport is worth something. Fans are free to expect that XFL 3.0 will not turn into sports entertainment. Rather, this can be a new hook for all the football fans to find every time the season comes around.
