Spanish women’s tennis star Garbine Muguruza‘s impressive start to the season took a blow as the WTA Tour was halted abruptly in March owing to the coronavirus pandemic. The former world number one Garbine Muguruza has now expressed her intentions of playing the US Open and “all possible tournaments” leading up to it, as she looks to make a comeback at the tour.
Muguruza started the season with an impressive runner-up finish at the Australian Open in January. She also made the semi-finals of the Shenzhen Open before that.
Many professional players are now attempting to get back their flow by participating in exhibition tournaments. Muguruza is no different.

Muguruza intends to play the US Open and French Open
The resumption of the season in mid-August will need players to put in a lot of work on their fitness and endurance with many events lined up with little time between them. With only two weeks after the end of the US Open and before the start of the French Open, many players have been forced to choose between the two Grand Slam events.

Speaking recently to EFE news agency, the two-time Grand Slam winner Muguruza said that she intends to play both events. “I have in mind to play the American tournaments in preparation for the US Open and the dirt tour that would end at Roland Garros. In short, all possible tournaments if the situation allows it,” said Muguruza.
About the US Open, Muguruza further said that a decision about its cancellation is going to be a difficult one. “It is better to play than to not play, but I understand that there are mixed feelings,” she added.

The current world number 16 admitted that it will be “shocking” to play without fans in attendance in stadiums.
She said that it will now be a question of mental strength for players in the post-COVID-19 era. “It is a question of resistance and mental strength. Whoever is stronger will have the easiest path to victory,” she said.
During the break, the former French Open and Wimbledon champion Muguruza trained in Geneva where she resides.
Defining herself as a “born competitor”, Muguruza has been training this year with another Spanish women’s tennis great Conchita Martinez who is coaching her. She hopes the partnership will produce great results in the times to come.
