

Due to the coronavirus spreading rapidly to many parts of the world, there have been talks about conducting the grand slams for broadcast only. This means that there will be no audience to witness these tennis matches. Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has just given his views on this.

Nick Kyrgios was having an Instagram chat with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. During this chat, he was asked whether he would play a grand slam without tennis fans. Nick replied, “100 percent not” which I think would be the reply of most tennis players.

A professional tennis match would not be a tennis match without an audience. This is because the audience makes a tennis match entertaining. Can you imagine watching a tennis match on TV without an audience cheering? I don’t think anyone could imagine such a situation. This is why holding a grand slam without fans is a bad idea.

We are talking about a grand slam without fans but we should be actually be talking if the grand slam will take place at all. Right now, the chances are looking slim. This is because the situation with the coronavirus is just getting worse and worse.

We have seen the suspension of the ATP tour get extended twice. We have seen the French Open postponed and the Wimbledon canceled. If the situation with the virus does not get better in the near future it is likely we will not see any tennis in the year 2020. I am sure nobody wants that.

Nick Kyrgios certainly does not want that. He wants to be the one who breaks the reign of the ‘Big 3’ by winning the biggest titles in tennis. If the virus is contained, he will have that opportunity in July. And when he does, he will have an entire stadium with fans cheering for him.
