Canadian tennis player Leylah Fernandez has been grabbing the headlines. She recently knocked off the two-time champion Naomi Osaka out of the US Open. At the age of 18 years, the youngster surely has a bright future ahead of her. In June this year, she achieved a career-high ranking of 66 in the world.

As we talk about Leylah Fernandez, let us take a closer look and find out what is the nationality of the youngster. Leylah was born in Montreal on 6th September 2002. However, her father is from Ecuador and her mother is a Canadian but of Philipino origin.

Leylah Fernandez is not the only athlete in her family 

As a professional tennis player, the youngster represents Canada. Her father was a professional football player who represented his nation. She has a sister too and like her, plays tennis as well. She has another sister who is a dentist. The teenage sensation resides in Florida.  

In her career so far, she has managed to win a WTA title and a Challenger Trophy. In 2019, she won the French Open juniors title. She made her Grand Slam debut during the Australian Open 2020.

Speaking of her performances in the current season, she began her journey in Melbourne and ended up losing in the opening round. After that, she crashed out in the second round of the French Open to American player Madison Keys.

Moving forward towards the Wimbledon Championships, she made an early exit, losing in the first round to Jeļena Ostapenko. At the moment, she is in the fourth round of the US Open, which is her best performance in a Grand Slam event to date. She even registered her biggest win after knocking out the defending champion.
