Day one of the 2018 Australian Open has wrapped up and the tournament is shaping up to be an interesting one. In the Men’s and Women’s draw, a number of big players have been stunned. We have already covered the Men’s side, so let’s look at the Women’s section for the 2018 Australian Open Upsets.

With younger sister Serena, out of action, the onus was on Venus to perform. Unfortunately, she was ousted by Swiss player Belinda Bencic with a score of 6-3, 7-5.

The former US Open winner also went down in the first round, this time to Japan’s Shuai Zhang. The final score was 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 in favour of the Japanese player.

Vandeweghe lost to Timea Babos with a score of 7-6, 6-2. All in all, it was a wretched day in the office for the Americans as they had 3 players go down early.

The Slovakian World number 24 went down in straight sets to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi. The 2014 Australian Open finalist’s score was 6-2, 6-2.
