Sloane had the following to say after the match:

“Going into it I knew I was going to have to just come out and be really solid and play my tennis. I did that today. She’s a great player and a great champion. I didn’t know if she was going to blow me off the court.”

  1. Serena Williams’ loss to Roberta Vinci

The biggest surprise result of the year without any doubt.

Serena Williams, who had a magic year, winning the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon, needed just U.S. Open title to complete calendar grand slam. Serena would have been the first woman to win all four slams in a year since the legendary Steffi Graf in 1988.
