In 1978, Navratilova became no.1 for the first time in her career and in the same year, she won her first Grand Slam singles title by defeating Chris Evert in the Wimbledon Finals.

Notably, Navratilova and Evert had one of the greatest rivalries in tennis as they faced 80 times against each other. In terms of head-to-head record, Navratilova 43-37 record against the American.

Retirement

In 1994, Navratilova took a break from tennis, as she decided to retire from the singles competition. However, she continued to play in the doubles tournament.

In 2006, she finally retired from professional tennis. Before retiring, she won the US Open mixed doubles title almost at the age of 50. Thus, she became the oldest player to win a Grand Slam title.
