In the days leading up to AEW Double or Nothing that is set to take place this Sunday, all eyes are on one man who is set to make a huge return to in-ring action- Sting. The WCW legend will return to live-action inside a ring in front of fans for the first time in over 5 years, and expectations are high.

However, the significant part of his stint so far in AEW is the relationship with former TNT Champion Darby Allin, of whom he acts as a mentor. Speaking to Paste, ’The Icon’ revealed how the entire angle with Darby Allin was presented to him and how it’s currently going for the two.

“Just to be straight-up, it was something that was put in front of me. It was Tony Khan. I’m grateful for that,” Sting said. “To be honest with you, I don’t know who’s mentoring who. [Laughs] Of course I do have some things I can bring after 35 years of being in the wrestling industry.

“But one thing that I found after being out of it for five, six years, as far as actually physically being in the ring and wrestling, is that it evolves, it changes. And man, it changed a ton. And Darby, he’s kind of getting me up to speed, to be honest with you,” Sting admitted. “He really is. He’s a go-getter kind of a guy, for sure—very talented in the ring, and extremely talented outside the ring.”

Sting sees his younger self in Darby Allin
‘The Franchise’ compared Allin to his younger self and noted how they are both alike in outlook.
“It’s not that you’ve arrived or figured everything out, but you really have your finger on the pulse of the wrestling industry and the fans, and what they think,” Sting explained, “and how to manipulate, and how to just be victorious in your storytelling, let’s say. And Darby, he’s that guy. He’s that guy right now.

Sting did compete alongside Darby Allin in a cinematic match earlier this year but will have to do it for real inside the ring at Double or Nothing. The duo will face Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page and this return could pose several challenges for ‘The Icon’, given that he can’t take solid bumps like he used to.
