Jim Ross was released from WWE in 2014, after a stint as a part of NXT’s commentary team. He is now part of AEW’s commentary team along with another former WWE employee Tony Schiavone and Excalibur.
Jim Ross was discussing the ongoing ratings war with WWE’s developmental brand. He talked about how WWE CEO Vince McMahon is trying to get AEW to stumble and lose the race to his company.
AEW presents itself as an alternative to WWE, not a competitor. “How’s that working?” Ross asked. “How’s that brilliant evil strategy?”
The legendary commentator was bullied out of the company by Vince McMahon. He suffers from an ailment called Bell’s Palsy, which became a subject of ridicule in the company.
He returned in the early 2010s, but retired in 2014. JR was even inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2007. He commentated many important matches that included Undertaker vs Triple H and Roman Reigns vs Undertaker.
“Going head to head is good in a boardroom, it’s good in a rah-rah meeting, but at the end of the day, you bring more people to a television set that are wrestling fans at 8 o’ clock eastern time on Wednesday night because you’ve got two brands now that the audience can sample,” said Ross.
He left the most scathing comment for last, “Unscrupulous, unethical situations are always justified by saying ‘it’s just business’. Well, it’s just business that we’re kicking your a** every [Wednesday] night.”
AEW has been dominating the ratings war against NXT. The yellow brand has only a few wins to its name.
The Wednesday Night Wars might be a fight for Tony Khan and Triple H, but it provides fans with extraordinary wrestling. The likes of Adam Cole, Johnny Gargano, Kenny Omega and Adam Page have been setting TNT and the USA Network on fire with non-stop, breathless action. It makes Wednesday nights the most exciting night of the week for wrestling fans.
The most recent Wednesday saw NXT’s Halloween Havoc go head to head with a stacked episode of AEW Dynamite. NXT opened with Johnny Gargano beating Damien Priest for the NXT North American Championship.
AEW featured Hangman Page vs Wardlow and Kenny Omega vs Pentagon Jr. in two blockbuster semi-final matches for the AEW Title Number One Contender’s tournament. Io Shirai defended the NXT Women’s Title in a barnburner of a TLC match against Candice LeRae and Cody beat Orange Cassidy to retain the TNT Title.
