The track community is overwhelmed after another memorable achievement for LGBTQ+ athletes this past weekend at 2023 USATF. Along with phenomenal athlete, Sha’Carri Richardson, one victory made history as Nikki Hiltz’s triumph became a remarkable story for the LGBTQ+ community.

Excited by the moment of winning and becoming the first nonbinary national champion in the 1500m race, Hiltz took to Instagram and tagged track icon Sha’Carri Richardson’s famous quote. They found inspiration in her powerful words and went on to write a beautiful caption that caught the world’s attention.  Sha’Carri Richardson, in turn, responded to this special win with her support.

Nikki Hiltz mentions Richardson’s famous quote

Hiltz won the women’s 1500-meter race at the 2023 USA Track & Field Championships on Saturday in Eugene, Ore. They said to Sports Illustrated, “I think there’s so much hate right now, and specifically the bills being passed for trans youth. I just feel like the LGBTQ community needed a win”.

After securing the championship title, Nikki Hiltz took to Instagram to share the triumphant moment with the world. Tagging Richardson and including one of Richardson’s famous quotes, Hiltz posted, “I am not back, I’m better.” This heartfelt gesture created an endearing moment among fans, leaving the 28-year-old’s Instagram followers overwhelmed with joy. In an equally touching response, Sha’Carri Richardson reposted Hiltz’s Instagram story and accompanied it with her own empowering words, simply stating, “TELL THEM.”

Richardson, who courageously came out as bisexual in 2015, made a resounding comeback this year. She dominated the national championship in the 100 meters, clocking an electrifying time of 10.82 seconds. Her impressive performance secured her victory and marked the fastest women’s 100m time of 2023. Even before the race began, Richardson captivated the crowd with memorable moments before grabbing the gold. As she prepared to enter the starting blocks, she reached up and seemingly threw her iconic bright orange wig, setting the stage for her extraordinary performance.
