Word No. 5, Alexander Zverev was stunned by Jiri Vesely on day 1 of the Wimbledon Championships 2019. The Czech qualifier, Jiri Vesely defeated Alexander Zverev in four sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 as the next-gen star struggles to make a statement in another grand slam event.

Alexander Zverev was certainly disappointed with his loss but he revealed that the lack of confidence cost him the match. He also talks about how his ex-manager, Patricio Apey is still affecting him outside the court. He said in a statement for Apey, “I thought we were friends.”

“It was kind of a typical Grand Slam match for me,” Alexander Zverev said in a post-match interview. “I started off well, then one or two things don’t go my way, and everything kind of a little bit falls apart.”

Zverev then revealed that he is not confident on the court. He said, “Yeah, I’m not very high on confidence right now. When I get to the important moments, I had, what, five, six break points in the fourth set alone, can’t take any of those. I had a Love-40, a 15-40. I’m down one breakpoint myself and he takes it immediately, where I miss an easy volley.”

The German further added, “So, yeah. I didn’t lose this match on tennis. It’s just, yeah, my confidence is below zero right now.”

“I could have won this match. I had enough chances. I had enough opportunities. It’s not about that. Yeah, I have to win tennis matches outside Grand Slams to play well at the Grand Slams. I haven’t done it enough in the last few months, so… I have to change that,” Alexander Zverev said.

Zverev also revealed that the problems in his game are not physical but mental.

He continued, “No, it’s just what happens with me. Physically I’m fine,’ he added. ‘I can play 10 sets, no problem. I don’t really get tired.”

The 22-year-old added, “Yeah, mental, I mean, I get down on myself a lot. But, yeah, I don’t think it’s neither of those because mentally I showed I’m quite strong in the last few years. It’s different things I think right now.”

Alexander Zverev suggested that he has to fix some personal problems to stay focused on the court. He said, “Life is also one thing. Everything that happens outside the court affects you. In the last two days, I would say are very rough for me personally. I’m not going to get into details, but I’m just saying. I have to fix that to play well on the court.”

The next-gen star is confident about the US Open and feels that it could be a breakthrough grand slam event for him. “I have a few months until the US Open. I’ll figure it out. I’ve always said that the US Open this year is the tournament that I think I can have my breakthrough at the Grand Slams,” the world no. 5 said.

“Let’s be realistic: grass is not my favorite surface if you look at the past,” Zverev said. “Even though I had a very good draw here, Wimbledon is always tough for me. Especially if I play someone like Vesely in the first round, who serves very well, I thought returned extremely well today.”

Alexander Zverev has been suffering from personal issues. He had split with his manager, Patricio Apey and has been taking care of all the things alone. He cannot legally hire a new manager as the contract between Apey and Zverev expires at the end of 2023.

Earlier before entering the Wimbledon Championships 2019, he said about his ex-manager Apey, “I’m very mad about it, cause it’s a person who was very involved in my life during the last few years and now he’s trying to make my life as hard as possible. Purposely, right before the big tournaments like this. Why he is doing that?”

Alexander Zverev continued, “What’s happening right now, it’s absurd. I’m not allowed to say anything official, but it is simply absurd and it hurts me because it was people who were very close to my life. I thought we were friends, I thought we were close, not only at the job, and I mean, to do stuff like that on purpose, that I don’t understand. Why and how one can even do that as a normal human being, it is…”

“There’s new news again, you can’t even imagine what he’s trying to do,” said the world no. 5.
