Alexis Ohanian, who co-founded Reddit 15 years ago, recently stepped down from the board of directors of Reddit to make way for a Black candidate. Ohanian took this decision in an effort to show his support to the black community. He also revealed how his wife Serena Williams and daughter Olympia influenced his decision.

The decision to resign from the Board of Reddit came after the death of an unarmed black man George Floyd in Police custody in Minneapolis. The incident led to anti-racism protests across various cities in the USA. Alexis also offered support to the Black Lives Matters protest by urging that a black candidate replace him on the board of Reddit.

“It was an absolutely hard decision. But thinking back, especially on the position our country has been in the last few weeks,” Ohanian told CBS This Morning on Thursday.

“I realized I needed to look at myself, look in the mirror, and see what I can do to help contribute to real possible change so that I can look my daughter in the eye when she is a little bit older. And she asks me what did I do to help make this country and this world a little bit better for her and for a whole lot of people who look like her,” he added.

How Serena Williams influenced Alexis Ohanian?

He explained that it was a hard decision to make until he realized that his greatest creation is not Reddit but his daughter as he ‘want her to be proud of him.’ Ohanian also explained what difference Serena has brought into his life.

“There are things that I do that my wife checks me on that I am doing with the best of intentions, but still, require me to feel that pain and then dig deeper,” he added.

“There are situations where I default expect to be heard. Because all of my life when I bring something up, I am generally in a position when someone is going to hear me, take my side, and trust what I have to say. And I take that for granted and it’s not until I am talking to my wife about things that I really understand that a not a luxury she has had,” Alexis concluded.
