Ranked No.30 in the world, Anisimova lost her father because of a sudden heart attack last year, just a week before her 18th birthday. In February this year, Anisimova parted ways with her new coach Carlos Rodriguez after just two tournaments. To make matters worse, she crashed out of the French Open 2020 in the third round despite reaching the semifinals last year.

After winning her first-ever WTA title at the 2019 Claro Open Colsanitas, Anisimova signed a multi-million dollar endorsement deal with Nike similar to the mega-deal signed by Maria Sharapova.
