“Amazing Memory” : Stan Wawrinka Reminisces ATP Finals Match Against Roger Federer

In the 21st century, Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka have taken Swiss tennis to new heights. Although vastly different careers, both adore and respect each other. Wawrinka has often spoken about his different experience playing against Federer and there is always a great joy in Wawrinka’s eye when talking about Federer.

Recently in a conversation with ATP, Wawrinka was taken back and asked about his 2014 ATP Finals clash against Federer.

The match was a headliner. It was a rollercoaster. Wawrinka was playing his best tennis that year and surely took Federer and his fans close to a heart attack.

“I think I was playing one of my best level that year in 2014.”

Federer had saved four match points to win the encounter late in the final set tiebreaker. Even though Wawrinka lost the match it was a special one for him. The sheer topsy-turvy nature might be the reason he adores it so much.

“It was an amazing memory. A lot of things happened in that match. I had match points, I served for the match and against Roger in the semifinal. So it was always going to be a special match.”

The match was tough and it had its after-effects on Federer. He was forced to withdraw from the final of the ATP Finals the next day against Novak Djokovic due to a back injury.

2014 season became even more special for Federer and Wawrinka as a few days after their clash they led Switzerland to its maiden Davis Cup triumph.

“We played Davis Cup straight after, yeah but the atmosphere to play against Roger is always different, and it’s very special.”

As a team, Federer and Wawrinka have done well for their country. Apart from the Davis Cup, they have won a doubles gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games. Wawrinka even now cherishes these moments and now he will cherish them even more as he himself admits being close to retirement.
