American Doubles Grand Slam Champions Call Out USTA Over Social Media Snub at Wimbledon Championships 2021

Wimbledon Championships 2021 draw sees a record 34 Americans in men’s singles and women’s singles; the most since 1998. Even though a Grand Slam also has doubles events, the USTA lauded its singles players but not its doubles players, and that didn’t go well with them.
As the USTA boasted its huge singles contingent in Wimbledon 2021, it did little for the doubles players. While Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, Taylor Fritz lead the singles draw for the USA there are a few other Grand Slam champions in the doubles draw. And hence seasoned doubles players such as Bethanie Mattek Sands and Rajeev Ram have called out the USTA on Twitter.

“It’s time to get fired up for some American action at Wimbledon,” USTA wrote on Twitter.

How many Americans are there in the Wimbledon Championships 2021 doubles draw?

Mattek Sands is a former doubles World No.1. She has 27 women’s doubles titles, including five Grand Slams. Including her and excluding the singles players, there are a further nine other Americans in the women’s doubles draw. Mattek Sands is going for a career doubles Grand Slam at Wimbledon Championships 2021.
She hasn’t won Wimbledon and this time she has partnered with Indian tennis player Sania Mirza. Apart from doubles Grand Slams, Mattek Sands has won four mixed doubles titles as well.

The other American stalwart in the men’s doubles draw is Rajeev Ram. His partner is Joe Salisbury and they are the sixth seeds. Ram won his only men’s doubles Grand Slam title with Joe at the Australian Open 2020 and they reached the finals at Australian Open 2021. He has also won two mixed doubles titles with the recent one at Aussie Open 2021. Including Ram, there are three American players in the men’s doubles draw.
