Andy Murray who is currently taking part in the Shenzhen Open in China, has withdrawn from the final two tournaments of the year, in a bid to train and recover properly for the start of the 2019 season. The Brit defeated David Goffin earlier yesterday in one of his biggest wins since his return to the tour after the surgery. Murray released an official statement on his social media stating his reasons to cut short his season.

“I’m over here in China, competing at Shenzhen this week and in Beijing in the week that follows before I call it the end of my competitive year. I’m going to miss the last couple of tournaments of the season because I decided along with my team that I need a long period of training and reconditioning to get myself in the best possible shape for the beginning of 2019.

I want to compete for the biggest tournaments again but unfortunately I won’t be competing after Asia in the rest of 2018. I’m looking forward to getting some hard training done and make some improvements, with the last few months being really positive, I feel like I made big strides forward after the rehab from the hip surgery.

I feel like with another strong training period I will make some big improvements and hopefully the next couple of weeks will go well in China and I’m looking forward to it.”

His mother Judy Murray has been keeping a close eye on his son, and she says that he will not be rushing anything in his bid to return to the tour. “He’s doing well. He’s working with a rehab specialist in Philadelphia,” said Judy Murray. “He wants to absolutely focus the rest of the year on getting his body as ready as he can for the start of (2019),” she added. “It’s been a long haul and that’s tough for anybody, but he’s incredibly disciplined, he’s incredibly resilient.”

“He loves what he does, so he’s desperate to get back. But… when you’ve been out that long, you don’t want to rush it”, she added.

Andy Murray will face Fernando Verdasco in his next round at the Shenzhen Open.
