Former world No.1 Andy Murray battled past Tennys Sandgren 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 at the Zhuhai Championships 2019 to claim his first ATP tour singles victory since his career-saving hip surgery in January.

The three-time Grand Slam champion was pleased to secure his second ATP singles win of the 2019 season as he called it “one of the best wins” of his career. Also, it was one of the toughest wins he has ever had.

His last win on the tour came in Brisbane prior to the Australian Open. However, the Briton did win twice at the Rafa Nadal Open – a second-tier ATP Challenger Tour event last month before he returned to the ATP Tour for the Asian swing.

“In some ways, it’s one of the best wins I’ve had, not in terms of like just getting through that today, but everything that’s gone into a sort of getting back to this point. You don’t necessarily appreciate what it’s like to be healthy & stuff at the beginning of your career,” Andy Murray said in the post-match press conference.

After his hip resurfacing injury, Andy Murray made his return to the tour during the grasscourt season earlier this year but he only played doubles before his singles comeback at the Cincinnati Masters and the Winston-Salem Open, where he lost in first-round.

The 32-year-old played the longest match since returning to tennis, which lasted two hours and 41 minutes in humid conditions. Murray admitted that he is tired but does not have any pain in his hip.

“It’s good to see I’m still progressing and making improvements. Tonight was a really good match to get through but I’ll see how I feel tomorrow,” the Scott said.

“It was important for me to get my first win on Tour since the operation,” he added. “Now it’s pretty cool to play and not have pain there.”
