Former World No.1 Andy Murray has received a wildcard and now will directly qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open 2021. The Brit will return to the event after having skipped it in 2020. His 122nd ATP ranking meant that he would have needed to play the qualifying rounds or receive a wildcard to play the Aussie Open.

A few days back, Murray missed the deadline for playing the qualifying rounds. But everyone will be able to catch him in action early on as Murray received another wildcard for the ATP 250 tournament in Delray Beach.

The last time Andy Murray played the Australian Open

The three-time Grand Slam champion will be seen playing at the Australian Open for the first time since the marathon first-round match he lost in 2019. In 2019, Murray had played his first-round against Roberto Bautista Agut and lost the five-setter. But following that match, an emotional Andy had announced that he might retire from tennis as his hip gave up.

Since his hip surgeries in 2018, Murray has suffered a lot and thus lost his old agility and strength. It is a superhuman feat that he was even able to play again after that, as doctors had no hope of a return. But now, Murray is again raring to go and has put a hold on his retirement.

Murray in Grand Slam in 2020

In 2020, Murray was able to play two Grand Slam events. He played the US Open through his rankings. He finally won a Grand Slam match after two years as he advanced to the second round there. Later, he received a wildcard to participate in the French Open 2020.

The French Open wildcard was a controversial decision. Tennis legend Mats Wilander had accused Murray of taking away opportunities from youngsters. Murray had a rough outing as he lost to Stan Wawrinka in the first round. But it can’t be denied that Murray still holds a huge stand in the tennis world, and his presence at the grandest stage after all the hardships is a testament to that.
