Andy Murray to Feature at Rafael Nadal Challenger Event

Former World Number one, Andy Murray announced about his decision to appear at Challenger events on tour after he lost his opening round match at Winston-Salem Open 2019 to Tennys Sandgren.

Now the Brit has made up his mind to feature at Rafael Nadal Challenger event in Mallorca, Spain. The tournament is organized by Sotheby’s International Realty and it is scheduled to take place from 26 August to 1 September 2019. Hence the former US Open champion, Murray will be in Europe when the elite players will be competing at Flushing Meadows.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, Andy Murray received an invitation from the organizers of Rafa Nadal Open to compete in their tournament. The Briton previously visited Manacor in July 2016 for its inauguration and after claiming his Wimbledon title in 2016, Murray spent some time on the Mallorcan courts.

It will be his first ATP Challenger Tour appearance since 2005 in Mons, Belgium. He played his first singles match after seven months in Cincinnati where he was defeated by Richard Gasquet.

At Queen’s, Andy Murray was in tandem with Feliciano Lopez and the duo lifted up the doubles title. After playing 16 matches on the doubles court where he accompanied different partners in the all the tournaments that he played, the Brit felt that he is done with doubles tennis and he needs to find his grooves on the singles track.

Failing to perform in the ATP tournaments, World Number 329, Murray decided to lower down the level of tournaments in order to get back to where he belongs. “I’m quite aware of where I’m at just now and what my level is. It’s competitive at this level but it needs to be better – maybe I need to play a level down to get some matches and build my game up a little bit before I start playing on the Tour again,” Murray said after losing his opening round match in North Carolina.
