Former World No.1 Andy Roddick takes a dig at Span’s star footballer Gerard Pique, who is planning to extend the Davis Cup Finals to two weeks.
Gerard Pique has revealed that he wants to expand the Davis Cup finals to a two-week event featuring 24 teams. He told Cadena SER: “It is a long-term project. It’s the tennis world cup and the idea is, over time, to go to a two-week competition and 24 teams.”

However, Pique’s plan did not go down well with Andy Roddick as the American blasts the Barcelona defender for further adding weeks to the already extended tennis calendar.
Retweeting news of Pique’s plan to expand the Davis Cup finals, Andy Roddick wrote, “We should definitely keep adding weeks to the calendar. Has proven to be super easy in the past. Definitely not a problem that’s existed for 25 years.”
Next-generation star Denis Shapovalov also agreed with Roddick that the tennis season is too long for the players as he retweeted Roddick’s comments and wrote, “Agreed, needs to stop.”
There have been two additions on the ATP Calendar after the establishment of the ATP Cup and Davis Cup. With the Tokyo Olympics 2020, scheduled next year, the tennis calendar will see the addition of 3 more weeks of tennis in the 2020 season.
The first edition revamped Davis Cup 2019 which will feature 18 teams play for the trophy over a week at the Davis Cup Finals takes place in November at Caja Magica in Spain’s capital, Madrid.
The top two players on the ATP rankings, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have confirmed their participation at the Davis Cup Finals 2019 and will lead Spain and Serbia respectively.
However, Roger Federer has not been very encouraging about the revamped Davis Cup and has denied his participation at the event, though Switzerland has not qualified for the 18-team event this year.
