“I can’t wait to get back on the court” – Angelique Kerber

She announced her decision on her social media handles. In her tweet, Kerber seemed excited to be back on the court. She and her team are ready to take the ‘challenge’ and travel to New York. Kerber also thanked the USTA and WTA for making the event as safe as possible.

“I can’t wait to get back on the court and compete. This is why I and my team have decided to take on the challenge and fly to NYC in a few days! Thanks to WTA and USTA for their huge effort to make this a safe event.” Kerber said

Earlier in July, Kerber had expressed her displeasure in traveling to the US. And indicated that a decision from her side would come after assessing the situation. It looks like she had some long discussions before agreeing to come to the US Open.

Kerber is ranked 23. She joins former champions Kim Clijsters, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka, etc in the main draw. It is interesting to see that the women’s draw has a lot of former champions but only has 4 top 10 players whereas the men’s singles has 8 top 10 players but only three past winners.

From the top 10 only Karolina Pliskova, Sofia Kenin, Serena Williams, and Naomi Osaka are playing. The rest have withdrawn citing the virus and lack of match practice as reasons for the withdrawal.

Kerber won the 2016 US Open beating Karolina Pliskova. And this season she reached the fourth round of the Australian. She hasn’t played since then so the first round of the US Open will be her first match action in 6 months.
