Players had long requested cross-play ever since the game’s launch. Starting October 6, they will get to test the much-awaited feature in beta release. The ability to play with friends on other platforms will keep players more engaged in the game. However, Apex Legends’ content creator, Crazy Ratchet is skeptical of one aspect in Apex’s cross-play functionality.

How cross-play works in Apex Legends

Chad Grenier, Game Director for Apex Legends, has detailed the cross-play functionality in the game. For starters, players will be able to party up and play together across all platforms, PS4, Xbox One, Origin, and Steam, after it launches there. Cross-play is enabled by default, but have the option to disable it. However, Respawn highly recommends ‘leaving cross-platform play enabled to ensure the best experience possible.’

Understanding how the cross-play match-making is going to work in Apex is equally important. While all console players will play together in lobbies, PC players will continue to play only with other PC players. However, if a PS4 or Xbox One player and PC player party up together, the team will match-make in PC lobbies.

Respawn has ensured that console matches don’t have PC players in them. At the same time, the match-making system allows console players to play with their friends who play on PC.

A slight problem in Ranked mode on PC

Being a player who mainly plays on console and switches to PC at times, Crazy Ratchet holds the opinion that all console and PC players should be able to play together in a mixed lobby. He explained how a bunch of players with different ranks make their way into Predator lobbies in the PC ranked mode.

PC matches often have long queue times. Due to that, players from tiers such as Gold, Platinum, and Diamond are matched into lobbies with Predator tier players. This makes the ranked play on PC easier for the highly skilled Predator players, who party up together. Moreover, coming up against Predator players in the same lobby makes it harder for the Gold, Platinum, or Diamond players to grind their ranks further.

Other games modes on PC like Duos or LTMs also have long queue times. Therefore, Crazy Ratchet feels putting all console and PC players together could help fix the problem in the ranked mode on PC. However, Respawn has made it clear that it wanted to ensure KBM players don’t match against console players, for obvious reasons.
