UFC 287 had a lot of hype around it. Fans and experts had been speculating what might unfold on fight night weeks before the event. The intrigue was primarily because of two fights. The first was Israel Adesanya vs Alex Pereira 2 and the second one that attracted attention was Jorge Masvidal taking on Gilbert Burns in probably his final fight in the UFC. Israel Adesanya and Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira were going to add a 4th chapter in their ongoing rivalry. Pereira Had won all three times the duo fought in the past but things changed at UFC 287.

Israel Adesanya knocked out Alex Pereira and broke into a wild celebration. He even mocked Alex Pereira’s son. Former Two division champion and Olympic medalist Henry Cejudo has now sent a message to Alex Pereira and urged him to fight in a rematch against Adesanya.

Henry Cejudo wants Alex Pereira to close the rivalry

Israel Adesanya is a fiery character and his celebration involving Pereira’s son has not impressed too many people. While Adesanya says he was taking his revenge, fans thought mocking a kid was a below-the-belt hit. Henry Cejudo too pointed out the fact in his message for Pereira and reminded him how he had won three fights. Two of them being knockouts and ‘The Stylebender’ had no right to deny Pereira a rematch. Cejudo said, “You beat him 3 times. Out of those 3 times… You knocked him out 2 of those times… He doesn’t have the right, he cannot be demanding that with this victory, That this story book is sealed. Not for me, not for me, especially with the fact that he pointed to you son and he did what he did”.

He further added, I want you to return and as a father, I want you to return and do what needs to be done. You are the one that will close this chapter.” Speculations about an immediate rematch had been jolted after Israel Adesanya said, he didn’t want one. Even UFC president Dana White had hinted that Alex Pereira would move to the Light Heavyweight division. If the move happens the ‘Stylebender’ vs ‘Poatan’ rivalry will see its end but if Pereira goes for a rematch, fans may see the duo add another chapter to the rivalry.

Great rivalries often start with little silly things that stay with one’s opponent. Back in the day, Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya were both kickboxers. Pereira knocked out Adesanya in a closely contested fight. Alex Pereira’s son had mocked Adesanya by dropping himself to sleep like a knocked-out Adesanya. It appears that the gesture made a deep wound in Adesanya’a mind. At UFC 287, the tables turned. Alex Pereira was knocked out and Adesanya took the opportunity to return his son’s favor from years ago. The gesture, however, didn’t sit well with a lot of experts. What’s your take on a rematch? Should Alex Pereira ask for one, or should he move to a different division? Let us know.
