Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns faced off against each other at UFC 273 in 2022. The fight was an action-packed affair that went the distance, but ultimately Chimaev walked away with a unanimous decision victory. What’s interesting is that this was the first time ‘Borz’ went to a decision since he made his UFC debut in 2020.

So does this warrant a rematch? Well, in a recent video shared on his YouTube Channel, Gilbert Burns was asked by one of his teammates at Kill Cliff FC if he knew about Chimaev’s intentions to run their fight back. He inquired, “Yeah, it was on the, you know, the UFC does the 5-10 minute catch ups and it had Khamzat’s interview and he said he wants a rematch. He had a good fight with you, but he wants a rematch with you. I thought you heard about it now.”

While Burns may have not seen the video and the existence of it cannot be confirmed as of now, in a 2022 interview with TSN, the Brazilian star had stated, “I believe we’re not done. I was No. 2, and I fought No. 11. I want a rematch with Khamzat.” But is the fight a possibility? Chimaev has been competing at middleweight for his last fight against Kamaru Usman and his upcoming bout against Robert Whittaker. As such, it remains to be seen how the situation plays out.

As Burns wonders if the Chimaev rematch is a possibility or not, there’s also some interesting development about the Whittaker-Chimaev fight that’s happening for sure!

Whittaker’s coach has come out and credited ‘Durinho’ for giving them the strategy they’re hoping to employ against ‘Borz’ on fight night!

Whittaker’s team looking to emulate ‘Durinho’s success against Chimaev

Robert Whittaker made short work of Ikram Aliskerov, who stepped up to replace Khamzat Chimaev on short notice for their previously scheduled clash. This time, for UFC 308, ‘The Reaper’ will be looking to end ‘Borz’s undefeated streak in the UFC and he’s got ‘Durinho’ to thank for showing him the way to challenge the relentless Chimaev.

What’s the plan? According to Whittaker’s head coach Alex Prates, the key is to not let Chimaev dictate the pace. Speaking to Sherdog, Prates stated, “The two last fights, especially ‘Durinho,’ the Gilbert Burns fight, I need to thank him for the blueprint. I watched the fight so many times. I think he gave a very clear path to victory by starting hard, be very aggressive from the guard, be very aggressive standing.”

Prates is confident that in a “dog fight” there’s not a man in the middleweight division that can out-work Robert Whittaker. If you forgot, ‘The Reaper’  went to war for 10 rounds with Yoel Romero in 2017 and 2018, and came out on top both times! In conclusion, it remains to be seen whether he can take a page of out Burns’ book end Chimaev’s aura of invincibility. But, do you think Khamzat Chimaev should pursue a rematch against ‘Durinho’ in the future? Or should his focus remain on the middleweight title? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
