The ATP Cup 2021 is finally going to be conducted after a number of discussions. Prior to the Australian Open in February, the second edition of the event will take place.

However, there are changes in the format as compared to the previous year. It will be held with 12 teams at Melbourne Park in Australia. The tournament will be played from February 1 to 5.

It was originally supposed to take place with 24 teams and was going to be hosted in multiple cities such as Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney. Originally, the ATP Cup was scheduled from January 1 to 10, 2021. However, this was changed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

ATP Cup 2021 to Be Held Only in Melbourne

The ATP Cup 2021 will be conducted only in the city of Melbourne this year due to the coronavirus restrictions. The mandatory 14-day quarantine period would prove highly inconvenient for everyone associated with the tournament.

$15 million was the total prize money at the event last year. There were three different factors involved in awarding the total prize money to players. It included a sum for participation, the prize money for individual match wins, and prize money for tie victories. 

Nonetheless, in the 2021 ATP Cup, the prize money will be $7.5 million. There could be a 40% reduction applied, depending on the crowd attendance turning up for the event held in the next year.

An undefeated player playing the event can make up to a maximum of 500 points as compared to 750 points in 2020. Although, in doubles, the points remain the same as they were in the first year, 250. 

During the group stages, the 12 teams will be divided into four groups of three teams each in a round-robin format. The winners of each group will qualify for the semifinals.

Last year, Serbia defeated Spain 2-1 in the final and lifted the ATP Cup. Novak Djokovic beat Rafael Nadal 6-2 7-6 during their match at the ATP Cup 2020.
