Tennis is one of the sports where mere amateurs can surprise top-level professionals. There is always room for a different tactic or strokeplay invention. Different trick shots are popularized only after someone executes them perfectly. For instance, Guillermo Vilas, the Argentine executed the ‘tweener’ or between-the-legs shot for the first time. He used them often in the 70s and other professionals copied him. Now, Roger Federer mastered the stroke and made it popular among the younger generation of players.

Similarly, a new clip has become viral which could potentially be a game-changer for professionals. Well, it wasn’t exactly a shot that stunned social media. A ridiculous attempt paid off for a tennis player when he ended up winning a point which was certainly lost. But, what exactly did he do?

An amateur tennis player executes a stunning block

The clip was from an ITF Junior’s match. During the rally, the executor, Tair Sarmanov had messed up a pick-up volley that invited his opponent to the forecourt. On arrival, his opponent had enough time and an entire court to himself to smash the winner past Sarmanov. However, he somehow managed to lose the point despite not missing his smash. How did this happen?

Sarmanov had no hope of winning the point. He put his racket up and tried to block the smash and it worked! The ball hit the opponent’s knee on the rebound and the point was awarded to the executor. Both players were stunned and so were the fans on social media as they had never seen anything like this before.
