Lesser-known American tennis player Michael Mmoh has stolen the spotlight at the Australian Open 2023. He defeated Alexander Zverev in a neck-and-neck match and has suddenly become American tennis’ next big thing. Although he is visibly overjoyed at this unexpected win, there is one thing that Mmoh is upset about. He misses someone and wishes dearly that they would have been there to witness his matches at the Australian Open.

Mmoh, in his post-match interview, talked about how he recently proposed to his girlfriend Klara Mrcela. Right before he left for the tournaments, he seems to have popped the big question, and she said yes! So it is only natural for the young tennis icon to miss his fiancée at such a crucial point in his career. However, Mmoh remains hopeful that this is probably not a regular scenario and his love will finally be on the tour with him in the coming months.

Michael Mmoh plans for a double-celebration

When asked about how big of a moment the win is to Mmoh, who is named after Michael Jordan according to the USTA, he didn’t hesitate to be candid. He opened up about missing his fiancée and how bad it would be if he was eliminated out of the tournament. Just two days after the proposal, Mmoh left his intended to play the Australian Open. He says, “The thing is I proposed, and then two days later I left to come to these tournaments. So it would have been maybe a little sad if I would have come back and lost in quallies.”

However, he knows that it wouldn’t have mattered to his girlfriend if he did not win the match. “At the end of the day it doesn’t matter, but to come back after probably the biggest win of my career, I think it just really adds to… “

Mmoh’s breathtaking performance in the Australian Open

Mmoh who says he already had his flight booked before the match with Zverev, cannot believe how the match turned out for him. Zverev, who is a former finalist of the Australian Open, was eliminated by Mmoh, ranked 107 in the world, in four sets of 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on the Margaret Court Arena.

Unsurprisingly, Mmoh was overwhelmed with emotions after this big win. He said, “Life is crazy. This is insane”. He relished the biggest win of his career and just wishes that his fiancee was there to celebrate this success with him.
