“Chance To Inspire”: Roger Federer Aligns Himself With Pete Sampras, Michael Jordan and Others

Every sport has a name that represents the game. In tennis, it’s Swiss maestro Roger Federer. Kick-starting one of the greatest eras in tennis, the 39-year-old lifted tennis to an unforeseen height. Today, he is an inspiration for athletes around the globe with his record-breaking career and warm, off-the-court character. In a film about himself, Roger talks about making the most of his success and his status.

World No. 1 for the most number of weeks (310), the Swiss player has surpassed many legends of the past. But it is not just tennis that makes Roger Federer a maestro, but also his relationship with his fans. His candy for eye shots and his loving smile make the legend who he is today.

Competing at the highest stage of a sport is one thing and dominating the top place for decades is another. Winning his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon seventeen years ago, Federer now has the most Majors (level with Rafael Nadal).

“Becoming World No. 1 and winning Wimbledon, sort of being the leader of the game in some ways or just a spokesperson for all male tennis players, I don’t take it for granted; I really appreciate it,” said 20 Grand Slam champion.

Although he is on the cusp of his 40th birthday, the Swiss player has not lost the spirit of the game. Instead, he aims to do his best possible and stand up and achieve even more in the sport.

It is true that young and old both draw inspiration from their heroes. They find a source of energy and motivation to do their best. Whatsoever the situation, a real hero always gives back for all the love he receives.

The Swiss-born continued, “Because for me, heroes are really important; you know, having Stefan Edberg, (Pete) Sampras, (Boris) Becker, (and) Michael Jordan. I have a chance to give back, I have a chance to inspire.”

Those who stand at the peak are best-placed to help others lift themselves. The oldest of the Big Three values his position, yet he remains modest about himself.

“I don’t know if I would do that much difference, all I think I would have to know is that I actually have time.”

After calling curtains on his 2020 season, Federer is set to mark his return at the 2021 Australian Open. Recovering well after two knee surgeries, he will soon be back at doing what he does best.
