A Month After Emma Raducanu’s Controversial Statement, Vital Cog in Andy Murray’s Team Backs the Young Briton -“Best Players Do Ask a Lot Of..”

Emma Raducanu is one player who is highly anticipated to make a comeback to tennis. The British youngster has been absent since May and has not confirmed any news of her return. The British superstar underwent as many as three surgeries earlier this year. She had carpal bosses removed from her wrist and also underwent an ankle clean-up job. However, recently, another aspect of her tennis gained much attention.

Raducanu has changed many coaches throughout her career. She has received much backlash for his comments, which have been discussed recently. Now, a team member of Andy Murray reflected on the topic recently and took a stance different from other voices. While many portrayed it to be a bad thing, he said that it is a good sign.

Matt Little is Andy Murray’s strength and conditioning coach. The coach has been around the tennis scene for a long time and was recently invited to ‘The Functional Tennis’ podcast. During his appearance, he talked about Emma Raducanu, who has drawn much flak over the last few months for changing her coaches several times. 

You know, obviously Emma’s comments recently around the questioning of her coaches. And I smiled when I saw those comments because I’ve kind of felt like, well, you know, the best players do ask a lot of questions.” reflected Little.

He further explained, “You know, when you’ve been around elite performers long enough, you know, that there’s no point turning up to them with an idea or something new, or something you want them to do without having that backed up by some evidence without being willing to back up your suggestions with some evidence, or some common sense reasoning behind that decision.”

Raducanu stated that she changes coaches often because they are unable to keep up with her questions. Therefore, she is unable to grow. However, she has still been questioned by several tennis experts and veterans over her choice of changing coaches.

John McEnroe questions Raducanu

The British youngster recently came out and said that she asks a lot of questions about tennis. On certain occasions, the coaches aren’t able to keep up with her, which is why she is often seen with a new coach. John McEnroe voiced his concerns about the state of Raducanu on Eurosport. While he said that her changing a coach when she was injured was likely to help the coach get another job, changing the previous coaches seemed like a mistake.

She won her first slam with Andrew Richardson, and it did not seem like a good decision for her to replace him. He asked, “But why would you change a winning formula when you did something so unexpected?“. Well, Raducanu did provide an answer justifying her decisions. Now, we await her return to see if she was right about her decisions.
