Nick Kyrgios benefits from Jannik Sinner’s withdrawal

The 20-year-old rising star from Italy, who already has 5 ATP singles titles to his name was supposed to meet Nick Kyrgios in his Round of 16 match at the Indian Wells. But now it seems that an illness will be preventing him from a shot at his 6th title. Sinner’s exit leaves only three top ten players in the draw- Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini and Andrey Rublev.

The announcement of Sinner’s withdrawal came about an hour before he and Kyrgios were supposed to take to the court. This gave an advantage to the Aussie, who moved into the quarterfinals automatically. He seems to be in an impressive form in the desert as he put up a clinical performance in the second round against Casper Ruud. Had the match taken place as usual, it would have been the duo’s first meeting. Many were anticipating seeing the two on court, given how deeply contrasting their personalities are. Sinner is known for his on-court calm demeanor and we all are aware of exactly how chaotic Kyrgios can be!

This is Kyrgios’s second tournament of the season, after the Australian Open. On his way to the final, other than Casper Ruud, he also defeated rising star Sebastian Baez and 32nd seed Federico Delbonis. He has reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set and has been in impressive form, managing to save all the nine break points that came against him, in his three matches.

In the quarterfinals, he will meet the winner of the match between Rafael Nadal and Reilly Opelka.
