Kei Nishikori was one player of the top 5 who showed immense potential in his game. However, the Japanese player was not able to go further than the final of the 2014 US Open and a few ATP 1000 tournaments. To worsen the blow, he was effectively out of tour since the 2022 season due to hip surgery. But things turned around once again as Nishikori is back this season. He managed to win his first title since 2019 and received praise from Andy Murray.

Murray is one player who understands what it’s like to be in the position of Nishikori. Ever since his bout with injuries in 2017, Murray has struggled to find his footing. Unable to reach his former position in the big four, Murray finally clinched the title in a tournament recently.

Kei Nishikori boosted by one of the big four

Since 2017, Nishikori has found it difficult to play with the stars of the sport. A wrist injury put him out of commission, and his career has been in a spiral since. He managed to win a title in 2019 and keep his position in the top 10. However, in the following years, he would fall further, and he currently ranks at 492.

In the Challenger Palmas del Mar or the Caribbean Open, Nishikori achieved a triumphant moment. He went past five players to lift the trophy while only dropping one set on the way to victory. As wishes poured in from around the world, Andy Murray decided to join the list as he congratulated the Japanese player.

Murray wrote, “Well done @keinishikori winning on your comeback 💪💪🏆“. Nishikori was delighted at the love he received from the player of the big four as he said, “Thank you Andy! You are a big inspiration.”
