Just months before the Australian Open in 2023, De Minaur startled the tennis world by defeating Rafael Nadal in an exciting battle at the United Cup. De Minaur’s triumph at the 2024 United Cup was the event that cemented his reputation as a men’s renowned tennis player in the competitive world.

While both victories are considered one of the greatest achievements in his career, de Minaur himself favors his triumph over Djokovic as his bigger achievement. “I’m going to go with the Novak win,”  he said in a post-match press conference. Explaining the reason behind his inclination towards it, De Minaur expressed his deep embarrassment the year before in the Australian Open, when he played Novak Djokovic and experienced a disheartening loss.

“It’s mainly based on the fact that I played him the year before in Australia. Again, he made me look silly on center court, like I was struggling to win games. Best-of-five match, and he, yeah, absolutely diced me up on my home slam, center court in front of all the Aussies. Yeah, it was devastating. It was borderline kind of embarrassing ”, he further added.

Defeating Novak Djokovic on-court was not only endeared by his fans worldwide, but De Minaur himself gained a lot of self-assurance after his incredible win.

Alex de Minaur’s victories over the two greatest players of all time, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic might help him climb the ladder of success quickly, but at the end of the day, it is all about how satisfied one is with their own development. De Minaur expressed his thoughts regarding his achievements and how they build self-confidence in him for the future.

“And to be able to kind of come back a year later, put all that behind me, and break through that barrier, I think it’s incredibly significant for me as a human being, as a player, and just to get that self-belief. Right?” he said in the press conference.

He further humbly pointed out how pleased he is to be able to have his victory on the court and said, “I think I’m extremely proud of my efforts being able to turn, you know, that match around.”
