German tennis star Alexander Zverev has said that he could link up again with former coach David Ferrer at some stage in his career. At the end of the 2020 tennis season, which didn’t turn out to be particularly fruitful for him, the 7th-ranked German split with the former Spanish tennis star.

Zverev said that he is currently getting coaching help from his father as well as his brother, Mischa, who still plays professional tennis.

He said that his father and elder sibling will track his progress from the sidelines at the Australian Open. Citing the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason why he split with Ferrer, the tall German said that the Spaniard wanted to spend more time with his family.

In a chat with Tennis Majors, Zverev said if Ferrer had to join back with him after spending a few with his loved ones in Spain, he would have had to observe two-weeks of quarantine before being allowed to travel with him again.

“That’s just something he couldn’t do during this time,” Zverev said.

Zverev came close to winning US Open last year

The German, who is yet to hire a new coach, said he didn’t think it was feasible to bring a new member into his support staff while the pandemic protocols are still in place.

“I think we left everything open with David,” Zverev said, hinting at his willingness to work with the Spaniard again.

He added that his elder brother was part of his coaching unit during last year’s US Open. 

Zverev came close to lifting his maiden Grand Slam title at the Flushing Meadows but lost in the final to eventual champion Dominic Thiem.

However, the German had his moments in the match, which was eventually decided in five pulse-racing sets.

“With Mischa, who was with me during the US Open, I have a great coaching team,” the German said.

Zverev added that despite not hiring a new coach, he is confident that his existing support staff is more than enough to take him deep into the Australian Open.

“I think I can win big tournaments with the coaching staff that I have,” he said.
