Alexander Zverev vs. Jannik Sinner: Preview

Alexander Zverev is currently in great form, looking to replicate his US Open 2020 success. The German reached the final at Flushing Meadows and looked incredibly close to winning, but ended up conceding defeat in a dramatic match against Dominic Thiem.

Zverev had a dream run at US Open and made his first-ever grand slam final. After losing out to Dominic Thiem, Zverev decided to opt-out of competing at the Italian Open.

He’s come into the French Open without prior preparation on clay. While this speaks volumes about his confidence, it might be difficult to transition from hard courts to a slower surface.

On the other hand, 19-year-old Jannik Sinner is unrealistically impressive. He’s soared into the fourth round at Roland Garros, which also happens to be his best finish in a grand slam. Sinner made a dream debut at the French Open as he defeated #11 seed David Goffin in the first round.

A lot is expected from the young Italian when he takes on the Zverev challenge in the fourth round. Sinner has a decent record on clay, and his underdog momentum might just push him to perform even better against the German.

What’s their head to head record?

Unfortunately, Zverev and Sinner have never locked horns before. The 4th round match at Roland Garros will be the first-ever meeting between the pair. Thus a lot is at stake when the future stars clash at Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Zverev vs Sinner: Prediction

Well, there are just two ways to look at this fixture. Both are aggressive performers who want to taste victory at any cost. On one hand, you have Alexander Zverev who holds more experience than his 19-year-old opponent.

But, due to a lack of preparation leading to the French Open 2020, Zverev is looking a bit shaky at the moment. Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert already put Zverev to the test in the second round and made him survive a five-setter.

On the other hand, Sinner is yet to drop a set in Paris! How good is that from the young Italian? He’s making his debut and has already cruised to the fourth round by winning all his previous games in a convincing fashion.

As mentioned earlier, both athletes would look to dominate from the start to gain all the early momentum. With a strong first serve, Zverev can certainly take control of the game and wear off any early jitters.

Even though one might predict Zverev to win the match, Sinner is bound to put up a fight. But here’s where the catch is: Jannik Sinner is yet to play a five-setter in a grand slam and his durability will be up for the test if it happens against Zverev. Either way, it would be a learning experience for the Italian.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev wins in four sets.
