Swiss maestro Roger Federer needs a third surgery on his right knee after reinjuring himself during the 2021 grass-court season. He had his first arthroscopic surgery after the Australian Open 2020, which had later resulted in complications. Hence, he had to undergo another arthroscopic surgery in June of the same year.
While the 40-year-old has had an unparalleled career, the recent year has taken a toll on his physical health. As a result, he will be “out for many months” and need rehab to return on the Tour again.

After his first right knee surgery, Federer took almost 13 months to come back. Hence, it is uncertain at this point how many months he will take this time.
Roger Federer’s right knee injury
Before playing the 2020 Australian Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer had shown signs of struggle. Many even thought he would pull out before the match. However, the Swiss maestro played but lost in straight sets 7-6, 6-4, 6-3.
In the days after the match, Federer had announced that he underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, which is mostly done to repair the joints.

Following that, the Basel-born had suffered a setback during his initial rehabilitation. During the Qatar Open press conference, he revealed that his legs had started to swell while cycling or walking, so he had to do the follow-up surgery to repair the undoing.
Eventually, Federer returned in March 2021 and took every precautionary measure to protect his knee. However, after Wimbledon 2021 exit, he updated that he would need another season to feel better for a medium or long term.
In an Instagram video, Federer said, “I’ve been doing a lot of checks with the doctors as well on my knee, getting all the information as I hurt myself further during the grass-court season and Wimbledon.
“That’s just not the way to go forward, so unfortunately they told me for the medium to long term to feel better, I will need surgery. I decided to do it.”

Will Roger Federer return?
Despite his age, these surgeries, and everything, Federer is still passionate to return on the Tour. However, he is not blindsided but “realistic” about the challenges lying ahead.
