Sinner’s childhood was defined by bouncing back and forth between skiing and playing tennis. We all know about his journey with the racket, but what about his affiliation with skiing?

Jannik Sinner’s father, Johann Sinner, worked as a chef at a local ski lodge in Italy. Sinner, influenced by his father’s liking, developed an affinity for skiing as well as tennis. While he kept juggling between the two sports back then, the ski lodge was the backdrop of where it all started.

Johann Sinner spent a crucial part of his life working in the cozy town of Sexten, Italy. Surrounded by the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, there’s a charming ski lodge called the Talschlusshütte Hut, standing proudly at 1,548 meters above sea level. That’s where Johann worked as a chef.

Jannik, who is now at a monumental phase in his professional career, found himself stuck between pursuing skiing or tennis. Considering he was a national skiing champion but just as good a tennis player, it was a tough decision. But the young Italian realized tennis was his calling. And his parents stuck by his choice when he left home at 14 to train with Riccardo Piatti. That constant support has helped the 22-year-old reach the position he is in today.

His mother, Siglinde Sinner, also worked closely with his father. Serving as a waitress at the same resort, she not only supported the family financially but also made sure to back the young tennis star in all aspects of his life. Jannik Sinner’s fanbase has extended its boundaries beyond Italy. As the tennis star slays his opponents on the court, the count of his admirers is rapidly increasing. Considering it will surely be a big day for Sinner, fans have been curious to know if Sinner’s parents will be a part of the massive crowd at the Rod Laver Arena.

Following his semifinal win over Djokovic, Sinner was asked if his family would make an Australian Open appearance for the finals. The 22-year-old gave a clear answer, saying, “[My parents] are back home and they will stay home.” In their absence in Melbourne Park, he sent them a thoughtful message. He smiled and said, Yeah, it is 8:15 in Europe. So, good morning, guys. But not only to my family, I think for for all the people who are close to me and all the Italian fans. It’s always really nice [to have your support].”
